relay for life concert

May 19th, 2009

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen …. And all the rest of you too.  We’re the South End String Band.  When Jane and Bill Gum asked us to put on a benefit concert for survivors, we thought they meant survivors of the Economic Debacle.  Figured maybe we could give a seminar here on South End strategies for coping with unemployment and poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, all those so-called problems folks face that we’ve so whole-heartedly embraced.

But just before we hit the stage, Bill tells us the benefit is for the American Cancer Society…….. Well…… okay.  I guess.  I mean we’d sure like to tell you the String Band is gonna cure cancer.  But… hellfire, that’s a big order on short notice.  I’m not real sure we don’t CAUSE cancer.  Altho the federal government doesn’t require warning labels on our CD’s yet so even pregnant women and big equipment operators are safe.    So far.

So okay, give us a few songs to warm up and maybe we’ll think of some sure-fire remedies.  This next one, tho, I doubt it would cure an ice cream headache, much less cancer.  … I wish
Bill had been clearer —- we would’ve picked some naturapathetic songs at least….
